The Essen-based company Evonik is making short-term investments in the production of lipids for mRNA-based vaccines at its Hanau and Dossenheim sites. Commercial quantities are to be produced there as early as the second half of the year as part of a partnership with the vaccine manufacturer Biontech.

Food - In order for the vaccine to be produced by Biontech, lipids are essential. Only with an increase in lipid production can the production of the vaccine be further increased. Evonik and the vaccine manufacturer Biontech are therefore expanding their strategic partnership in this area.

In mRNA-based vaccines, the mRNA is enclosed in a lipid nanoparticle (LNP) composed of various lipids. The LNP protects the mRNA and brings it safely into the cell. There it is released so that the vaccination can take effect. Evonik has been active in the field of this so-called drug delivery technology, which also includes lipid nanoparticles, for decades and cooperates with manufacturers and developers of various drugs around the world. The Essen-based company is one of the few integrated development partners for gene-based therapy approaches. Through the partnership with Biontech, the company intends to consistently expand its position as an integrated development partner in cell and gene therapies, explains Thomas Riermeier, Head of the Health Care Business Line. This includes the marketing of special pharmaceutical excipients, such as lipids, as well as the development of formulations, i.e. the combination of excipients and active ingredients. At the same time, Evonik also produces clinical test samples and invests in expanding its own production of commercial quantities through to bottling.
